Background

This specific version is one of the earlier revisions of this lens. It was a kit lens that came with crop sensor cameras and was as such, not an awesome lens. However it mostly got the job done, including for myself.

This lens is part of the EF-S line which is designed for crop sensor cameras, whereas the EF lenses are made for the full frame cameras. You could use EF lenses on EF-S cameras however they were cropped and zoomed by about 1.6x. However, the EF-S lenses won't really mount to full frame cameras and when you do they will have vignetting.

Identification

The lens will be marked "CANON ZOOM LENS EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS" around the front lens element.
